The Chequers at Burcot
Oxfordshire

An award winning gastropub south of Oxford
required a complete refurbishment. The Chequers is a
400 year old public house with a long tradition in the area. The tired looking black beamed interior need a completely new look. We were approached to provide
a design solution that brought together the owner and head chefs passion for a traditional meat menu along with a celebration of taverns of the past and traditional
farming culture.
Sourcing vintage cookwear and farm tools
from Eastern Europe, France and the US became somewhat of a passion for us as we became immersed
in the ephemera buying. A selection of these were then mounted onto aged wooden boards for display. We even found a still sharp five foot wooden potato slicer from a farm in Lithuania that is now mounted on the wall and acts as a shelf for a vintage bottle and flower display. A full size pulpit sits in the welcome area adding to the sense of theatre. We sourced originally distressed wooden shelves and placed our growing collection of original items in them.
Three distinct areas dining areas
linked by a theme was an important requirement of the overall design. Our choice of supplier for the handmade tables and the banquettes that we designed along with the sourced general seating acted as a unifier. Specific dominant elements such as the bulls head printed onto hessian in the main dining area, the wood store that we designed next to the fireside area and the light and airy colour scheme for the gallery eating area served to give a differing character to the zones. The amount of table covers was paramount and the owner wanted to increase this from the existing capacity by a third.

Our 3D drawings
accurately showed how our sourced items, commissioned tables and benches and new
colour schemes would look in situ. This proved to be extremely informative and time saving for all involved in the project. We also supplied detailed design and construction drawings for the bar area shelving.

Not complete without a cow !
We sourced and painted a fibreglass cow with all the choice cuts marked, placed in front of The Chequers pub just to make sure that all the passing trade knew that this was a restaurant ... for meat eaters.
